FEATURED PROJECT:
HUDSON-PANOS HOME
HEALDSBURG, CA
Project Manager: Denny Kasten
Site Superintendent: Tim Morgan
Designed By: Swatt Architects
Awards & Accolades: Western Red Cedar Architectural Design

The Hudson-Panos House is a 2900 square foot residence located on a nine-acre hillside property in Healdsburg, California. The owners, who reside in the Nob Hill district of San Francisco, desired a restful getaway, where their family could spend weekends and holidays in a relaxed, country environment. Their goals included open planning for casual family living, generous spaces for children to play, strong physical connections to the land, and maximizing views to the surrounding natural landscape and the Dry Creek Valley below.

The home plan consists of two parallel wings that are slightly offset to create a linear courtyard. A detached carport anchors the east side of the house, while a 50 foot-long swimming pool terminates the linear composition to the west. A large, two-story volume with clerestory glazing creates an exciting vertical counterpoint to the mostly horizontal design, and bathes the interior with natural light.

Hudson Panos - LIving Room

In addition to spatial and lifestyle requirements, the owners wanted to build a home which would run completely off the electrical grid. This was accomplished with a 3.4 kw photovoltaic array, located on the upper roof, along with a 5 kw battery back-up system.

The exterior is clad in clear finished 1x4 cedar boards, gray integral colored stucco, and silver painted aluminum-clad windows. The interiors include limestone and oak floors, maple cabinets, birch doors and colored glass tile accents. The exposed structure of Douglas fir glue-laminated beams and hemlock decking, combined with cedar eyebrows, deep overhangs, and trellises extend the view outward, blurring the boundary of interior and exterior space.

Project Highlight: This new 4200 Sq Ft residence will incorporate many green building components the most prominent being hydrogen fuel cell technology. According to ClearEdge Power this will be the first residence in Marin County to use a hydrogen fuel cell to power the home. The unit extracts hydrogen from PGE supplied natural gas and converts it into electrical power. The bi product of excess heat is then used to help heat the pool and domestic hot water.

Project Highlight: Formerly a duplex, this single family home was expanded to support a growing family. The home was outfitted with prefinished Nichiha fiber cement siding, raised seam metal roofing for the new entry, and new decks to capture the views of the San Francisco Bay. The floor plan was completely reconfigured and additions to the footprint were also required to create the new space.
